      Interview

Applied online and received an email for setting up an interview with a recruiter. 1st interview was canceled an hour before we were set to meet and rescheduled for the following week. We spoke over the telephone and basically the recruiter seemed uninterested before the call fully started. She proceeded to tell me that they want someone in NY and next choice would be Denver and if they don’t find anyone next would be a candidate in California but to keep in mind they have a huge candidate pool already in the West Coast. I live in Southern California. She blatantly then told me that I most likely will not be considered since they want someone in NY…. So why call me? She even mentioned she knew I lived in Southern California when she saw my resume. The job description also asked for experience in workday which I had and she said that my experience was not enough as they wanted someone who had implemented this system since the beginning. The job description never made any mention this would be a requirement. Overall a waste of time and left a horrible taste in my mouth as I have used Handshake in my previous companies and thought it was a great product. I would not recommend this company to anyone I know for a job. The recruiter needs a review on how to screen candidates.

      Interview

I had a great interview with the Recruiter and Manager - the interviews were quickly scheduled and I felt like I got a good sense of the company, role and compensation from the initial conversations. I was then asked to submit an assessment and was told once submitted I would be scheduled for an interview loop. Two days after I submitted I received an automated email declining me from the role. I followed-up as I was told I would be scheduled for an interview and asked for clarity. I received an unclear voicemail back from the recruiter telling me the email fired by mistake, but they updated the JD and while the role had been listed as Remote, they decided they wanted someone in commutable distance to the office (which I was not). Recruiters and HMs need to decide on this BEFORE posting a job and interviewing candidates. It is extremely frustrating to not only waste my time but also get excited about a role, only for them to change the location mid-way through the interview. Where I was located was discussed during my first call, so it was not a surprise. I also saw another review for this same role from someone on March 10th saying the same issue - they clearly had specific locations they wanted to hire people in, but haven't been upfront about it and wasted candidates time. This is a clear indication of how chaotic and unstructured the recruiting process is but also Handshake's internal teams.
