      Research Associate Interview

      3 Sept 2015
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Hanover Research in Aug 2015

      Interview

The interview process was extremely long-winded and drawn out. I appreciate Hanover wanting to recruit very qualified employees, but it is frustrating to say the least for those who are not offered a job. The IQ test, which I honestly forgot I did and was reminded by the other reviews on here, was standard and not very difficult. Hanover informs all of the candidates that there is no "wrong" score, but it is very obvious that the candidate choices are tailored by their test scores. I received a callback for a phone interview after the test, which went very well. The HR person I spoke with was friendly, professional and insightful about the job description and overall atmosphere at Hanover. It made me really excited to go forward with the process. I was then assigned a "homework assignment" which was to write a research report to a fictitious client about a topic. Hanover stated again, their is no "wrong" answer. The deadline was a week. Mind you I was in the middle of finishing my current full-time job, so finding time for this assignment was difficult to say the least. Regardless, I put in about 20 to 30 hours for this assignment. Like I said, I was intrigued by the phone interview and really wanted to be a part of the Hanover team. Since I did not know anything about the topic prior to receiving the prompt, the research portion took the most amount of time. I was beyond confident with the final product and was sure that I would at least receive a face-to-face interview at Hanover. However, the team said I didn't answer the prompt the way that were looking for, so they were going ahead with other candidates. Not only did I find this disheartening, I was shocked. I put so much time and effort into a fictitious assignment while juggling working another full-time job just to be told that I didn't answer a prompt that had no "wrong" answer incorrectly. I understand that Hanover wants to recruit the best employees for the job, but the process is an ENORMOUS waste of time for those who do not get hired.

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry that you did not have a positive interview experience. We are very upfront about the steps in the interview process as well as the rigor and length of time the process takes once the homework assignment stage is reached. The Berke Assessment test instructions clearly state that there are no right or wrong answers because it is trying to assess an overall personality and work style preference fit, however, the homework assignment makes no such claims. We are clear in the written prompt that the homework assignment is designed to mimic an actual report request for a client and we purposefully assign a topic that the majority of candidates are unfamiliar with to assess whether a candidate can learn enough about the topic to know what to include and exclude in their final report. This is a core part of the job. Hanover's clients can ask us to provide a report on a wide variety of topics and often the researcher assigned to the project has a limited amount of time to become familiar with the topic in order to adequately address their client's query. We make the assessment on whether to invite a candidate in for an in-person interview based heavily on the research and writing quality of this report so it is unrealistic to assume all completed reports will result in an in-person interview or that a completed report will always be on point with Hanover's clients expectations. We do not assume candidates will submit perfect reports but do expect that key facts and findings to be included as well as some conclusions based on these facts. I do understand your frustration at not being selected after putting in so much work but am glad to hear that your recruiter was able to provide feedback as to why you were not selected to move forward in the process. We do wish that we could invite all candidates in for the in-person part of the process, but feel it would be an unfair use of their time unless we are confident that the individual will be able to excel at the core writing part of the role.

      Interview

The first interview was a phone screening with a recruiter. Super fun conversation and chill process. But for students who want to look for jobs starting at summer, they can’t hold a position for too long if you apply on October or so.
