      Accounts Assistant Interview

      2 Mar 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Shrewsbury, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Hatfields (Shrewsbury, England) in Feb 2020

      Interview

I found the interview process odd and not like any other interview I’d been to before. The structure was non existent and there was a lack of interest in my credentials. Firstly, the interview itself was 20 minutes. Usually I would expect an interview to be around an hour depending on the flow of the conversation and the skill of the job. I found this quite unusual as I struggle to understand how you can know whether an applicant is the right fit without asking the relevant questions. I was firstly asked to talk about my cv, as this was a brief question I replied to the interviewer asking “what would you like to know?”. The interviewer simply said “start from the beginning”. Baring in mind I was applying for an accounts assistant role, I was having to talk about work experience at a hairdressers when I was 15, almost 8 years ago! This completely threw me off guard as I was expecting more questions related to the job role and my more current work. It almost felt like they didn’t take the time to go through my CV or prepare properly for the interview itself. In terms of them talking about the job role and what it entails, I received more information from job advert itself. When I asked what are the day to day operations like, it was like I completely overwhelmed them that I could ask a question like that and almost like they didn’t know how to respond. There were none of the normal interview questions that you would prepare for or expect such as any difficulties you’ve overcome, where you’ve achieved something you’re proud of, not even 1 question about why you would like a new job. When I asked about progression within the job, again it was a question I don’t think they were expecting and I felt like it resulted in them not really promoting the opportunities that could be had. Overall, I found the interview highly disappointing. If I would’ve know the interview would’ve been like this then given the current situation (COVID-19) I would’ve insisted on this being interview being conducted over zoom or teams. Instead I spent more time driving to the interview itself than actually being in the interview.
