      Software Engineer Interview

      29 June 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience

      Application

I interviewed at Healx in June 2020

      Interview

Did an initial interview after the company reached out to me directly. During the phone interview, no one was really interested in talking about how I can help solve their technical problems, or ensure maintainability of the code, or help with the speed of iterating through different solutions. I was given canned answers about the company instead. When I tried to talk about data engineering, my points were waved away, because they “didn’t really need scalability” and that what was really key for the job was making “visualisations” for the scientists. (Mind, it wasn’t a Frontend-only role). Got rejected on the basis of “other candidates having previous BioTech experience”. No comments on my engineering abilities. And we didn’t talk about BioTech at all during the interview. It’s like getting a “no” from Spotify because other candidates could name more music bands than you. This tells you something about the engineering culture. All in all, the mission seems great and I wish them all the best. But as an engineer, I wouldn’t waste time on this one again. Advice: - be a bit more diverse. If you reject people from non-research environments right off the bat, you’ll miss out on the latest know-how from the IT industry. - software engineers are able to pick up domain knowledge as they go along; it’s called a growth mindset

      Interview

Take home task was so specific to the business the company is in, I felt like if I completed it it would be free labour for them. So I had to say no and stop the process.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on your recent experience interviewing with us, we’re always looking to improve our process and responding to feedback is something we proactively encourage within Healx. With regard to your comments about the task you were asked to complete, I want to assure you that the technical task has been specifically crafted solely for the purpose of evaluating candidate's abilities and suitability for the role within an interview context. The work of the candidate would never be used outside of that context, and we apologise if we ever gave the impression that it would be. We strive to achieve a positive candidate experience at every stage of the interview process so if there is anything further you’d like to share with the team regarding the task or your interview, please message the recruitment team directly here at Healx (recruitment@healx.io).

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, and we're sorry to hear about your experience whilst interviewing at Healx. From the information you've shared, it appears that you are referring to an initial screening call you had with our recruiter. Detailed technical discussions would normally happen at a later technical interview, and would not be covered in this initial screening phase. With regards to the biotech focus you mentioned, we are always looking to expand the knowledge of processes and techniques within our team, and while not a requirement in some specific instances, relevant or unique domain experience can put one candidate ahead of another. We are always striving to improve our hiring processes, and we would encourage you to share your concerns with our recruitment team so we can learn more about your experience and improve our processes in the future. The team can be contacted at recruitment@healx.io. Thank you again for your comments.
