Was contacted by recruiter multiple times even though Ruby is nowhere on my resume. Decided to schedule an initial conversation anyway.
Recruiter's behavior told me everything I needed to know. Asked rude and intrusive questions. Was ambiguous about next steps. I asked about the salary range and wasn't given an answer. I was told I couldn't continue with the interview process if I didn't give my salary range. Ridiculous. Shogun is just another employer taking advantage of COVID by short-changing real engineers by playing ridiculous games.
Unless you're willing to work for the bare minimum, I would avoid this place. There are MANY other places to work in California.

Other Software Engineer interview reviews for Hearth
1 Take, 1 technical, and 1 system design. It required backend or fe knowledge for whatever stack applied for. Followed by PM, VP and CEO interview. Total of maybe 6h - 9hrs worth of time

Question 1
What my background was the standard questions before they dive into the technical stuff.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Hearth (San Francisco, CA) in Jan 2022
Interview
- Recruiter reached out
- Recruiter screen
- Coding challenge (1 coding question, 1 SQL) --> took me 1.5 hr
- Onsite (3 hr)
Interviewed for BE engineer role for developing internal tool + general BE needs. Hearth has a pretty small engineering department still (think it was 17 total for all of engineering) so engineers kinda do everything
Onsite was:
- 1 hr for the IPv6 question they tell you to prepare for
- 1 hr for system design interview
- 30 min behavioral interview
- 30 min behavioral interview / chat with VP of engineering
Everyone was super nice, accommodating and cool to talk with. Hearth definitely some really smart, competent and fast engineers, and the engineers definitely fit the startup "type" - self-starters, hard-working, doing everything, always learning and always "busy" but not overworked - Heath does value WLB from what I gathered.

Question 1
IPv6 question variation: parse array into array, converting one format of strings to another
