The very first response to this question from a Product Manager should be is "To Whom am I explaining this to?". This looks extremely obvious but oft ignored because as a Product Manager your response is your product and your answer is your value that you deliver and in some way your positioning as well. Anyways different answers based on the audience. I will take one example. If the interviewer says "to your grand mom (or any elderly who might not have heard of the term product manager), then you can list down the characteristics of the user (in short persona). Then make an assessment of how that information would be valuable to her (value proposition) and what situations would she use that information (scenarios and use-cases). Finally think of messaging and positioning based on a generic use-case. For example, persona can be "user who likes less complicated things (no jargons), succinct response so that she could remember, easy to imagine for significant recall etc etc". You can also add behavioral aspects such as when would she be most attentive etc but this takes it too far for an already long interview answer so lets restrict it to psychographic. Use-cases can be B2B2C where she wants to impress her other old friends with what you do or wants to make some suggestions to you from her experience or wants to tell it to your relative who is jealous of your credentials etc etc. This is how a Product Manager would approach it. So the answer can be something like "Granny, you use this walking stick to walk around the house and wherever you go. In olden days, you would not have been able to find such a beautiful stick, you would have taken a branch of a tree and used it to walk around. Someone like me thought that the stick might break, might hurt you or wont allow you to travel far. Some person like me understood your problem, created the stick and brought this to you. I do the same job just that I create something else to help my customers or users. I am their walking stick." Good Luck, Nilesh Dalvi
