      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at InstaDeep (Paris) in Feb 2025

      Interview

Recruitment for Deep Learning in Protein Design. First, a technical test in HackerRank. It was tricky to understand the task, since it was using protein jargon, but once I got an idea, it turned out to be just simple string processing, like matching substrings. Second was technical interview in form of a discussion. It was focused on GNNs, . Final was to solve a challenge in 7 days max. It was about MHC allele - peptide binding prediction. Here they value better performance over fluff (complicated, SOTA, bla bla). Something basic that works is a good start. In general, they value applied over theoretical by far, so no need for implementing a huge, cutting-edge model. Pay attention to meaningful metrics (hint: AUC ROC is lame)

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We appreciate the time and effort you invested in each stage. We design our interviews to reflect the nature of the work our teams do day to day, with a strong focus on understanding how candidates think, communicate their ideas, and approach real-world technical challenges. Discussions around past projects, problem-solving approaches, and practical assignments are an important part of that, especially for our intern roles where learning potential and curiosity matter greatly. While not every interview leads to an offer, we aim to keep the process structured, fair, and consistent, and to give candidates a clear sense of the kind of work and expectations involved in the role. Thank you again for your interest, and we wish you all the best !

      Interview

Good interview, very respectful and helpful interviewers. Very responsive throughout the process. Regarding the take home assignment, I recommend being very thorough. Imagine being an actual research engineer/scientist. Regarding the rest, review your ML knowledge, but also software engineering basics, algorithmics basics (Leetcode medium) and with math it's anything goes, could be anything from linear algebra to statistics or more likely both.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. We’re glad to hear the process felt positive, responsive, and supportive. We also appreciate the level of detail you shared about the different stages of the interview process for our future candidates. As much as we believe in sharing what we learn in AI with the world, it’s always great to meet people who share the same mindset. Insights like these can genuinely help others better understand the process and prepare for the different stages of the interview. We put a lot of thought into creating an interview experience that reflects how our teams work day to day, combining machine learning foundations, software engineering practices, and structured problem solving. Our aim is to give future candidates a clearer sense of what to expect in the role, through assignments that mirror real research workflows and allow for depth and ownership. We know the process can be demanding across multiple areas, and we really appreciate the time and effort our candidates invest at each stage.
