I’d like to share my recent interview experience, where I ultimately declined a job offer due to concerns about the hiring manager’s attitude and transparency. During the process, I learned that the hiring manager had promised a favored candidate—who applied for the NW Regional Scientific Director position and is based in Seattle—that she would reorganize the territory to grant her all of California and Hawaii. Meanwhile, I was interviewing for the SW Regional Scientific Director role, which originally included AZ, Utah, NV, SoCal, and Hawaii. The territory changes were made without any direct communication to me; instead, I discovered this crucial information from a colleague, who happened to be the favored candidate for the NW region. Learning about such significant changes from a peer, rather than the recruiter or hiring manager, highlighted serious issues in the hiring process and raised questions about fairness and professionalism.
