I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at James Hardie Building Products (Reno, NV) in May 2013
Interview
Corporate Finance Backgrounds Need Not Apply
The career section states how the firm embraces individuals with multiple backgrounds and how individuals move across the organization - Don't believe the hype
I applied for the Plant Controller role via the company's website. Within a couple days I received the following email from the recruiter
"Thank you for your interest in JamesHardie; I have reviewed your resume and am very interested in speaking with you further about the opportunity. Please call me or e-mail me at your earliest convience to schedule an initial phone screen. I would also like for you to send me a resume."
I replied and scheduled a time to speak with him and a formatted copy of my resume (application had text version)
We spoke for literally a few seconds when he stated that "the team doesnt want to hire individuals with corporate finance backgrounds."
Shocked... did he read my resume? Its very transparent. My background has been in manufacturing finance at the corporate level with a ton of time spent at the manufacturing facilities and clearly states corporate consolidation and business unit finance. Plus who does he think the plant controllers report to and get scrutinized by - corporate. At no place does my resume state that I was a plant controller. Why are we speaking if this is the determining factor?
I cant help but think there was something else going on....
If he has predetermined that the company doesnt want to pursue my candidacy for whatever reason then dont request a phone interview.... Dont waste people time. He was rude when after he made the statement of not wanting to hire anyone with corporate finance background that I tried to sell myself and stated that "You dont have a leg to stand on" "You background is in Corporate Finance which the team doesnt want and you aren't currently employed. In fact you haven't worked since... Plus you have only a few years in manufacturing"
I found his comments to be very insensitive especially since I had taken time off to take care of my dying father who has since passed away which he was aware of... Plus his tone was ridiculous. My resume included very clearly everything that he was trying to belittle me for. Why invite me to a phone interview? Why waste my time?
I've spoken to some jerks throughout my life but this JS takes the cake!!!!!! I thought take the job and shove it. Delete my resume from your system!!!!! I know my worth and if you cant see if your loss.
But simply said "Take care and have a nice day."
This company obviously doesn't recognize good talent and they have a fool representing them in their HR recruitment
Based on this encounter, I wouldn't recommend the company to my worst enemy let alone a trusted friend ....
I wish I had read the review section before applying.... Based on my experience all of those former employees who have written to date are telling the TRUTH

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at James Hardie Building Products
Interview
Asked to schedule time to do phone screen the next day and send over resume. Responded to recruiter with resume and potential times. Never responded by the times I had provided. Eventually responded days later with time slot for another day. I replied back that the time slot worked and looked forward to chatting. Never received a call. Coming from a software/high-growth company, I found this to be very unprofessional and I highly regard James Hardie products. I would say that this HR team is probably not rated on their ability to provide a positive candidate experiences. Left bad impression. I hope the rest of the company doesn't operate like this.
