I applied in-person. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Kmart (Key Largo, FL) in Jan 2011
Interview
I approached the HR Manager shortly before Christmas to inquire about a position. She said to redo my application and she would contact me early January. She called the Friday of New Year's weekend to set up an interview the following Monday. The interview went well. She asked questions about how I would handle different circumstances. One question was "when did I exceed expectations of a former employer". She stated that she was "blown away" by me and gave me a "pre-employment" offer, pending the drug screening and background check.
She called the following Tuesday and offered me a position. I was asked to come in that Friday (Jan. 14th) for orientation. I showed up for the orientation a few minutes early and was told to go back to the HR office, the manager had not arrived yet. There were a few others that had been hired, although none of them were there either. After waiting 20 minutes past the orientation time, a lady came back and said there was an emergency with the HR manager and she would call me on Monday. Monday came and went. On Tuesday, I called to find out what was going on and she was still out. I have not heard from her or anyone since.
Although the interview went well and the HR Manager was professional, I consider everything else to be very unprofessional. I suspect reverse "discrimination" and that I was only considered due to reverse "Affirmative Action". I base this suspicion on the fact that only certain ethnic groups work at this particular store. Perhaps the Corporate office caught wind of this and forced them to consider all candidates. I thought about writing a formal complaint, but due to researching this company and not wanting to work there anyways, I decided against it. It's not worth my time and I have since then been offered a position with a more reputable company.
