I applied through university. I interviewed at Knoxville News Sentinel
Interview
It was very easy and pleasant. I interviewed with the manager and they were very responsive afterwards. Good communication overall on hiring timeline and what they needed for the position.
I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Knoxville News Sentinel
Interview
I was contacted by a USA Today recruiter about a month and a half after applying for the position. He told me that I was a top candidate and he asked if I would have time for a quick five minute call about the position. I was on the phone with him within 30 minutes of receiving his email and the call went well. (The questions below are from that call.)
The recruiter told me that I should hear within a week from the editor of the News-Sentinel about next steps, including an interview. After I didn't hear, I was told it'd be another week. This delay went on for over a month before the recruiter admitted to me that the process was taking far too long and that his efforts to nudge the editor were not successful, and he encouraged me to contact the editor myself.
I emailed the editor multiple times and never received a reply. I finally got him on the phone over a month after my call with the recruiter, and he told me he was still screening candidates for the position and that I should hear within a week. A few days later, the job posting was taken down, so I reached out to the recruiter again. The recruiter told me that they took it down because they didn't need to see any more candidates.
When I called the recruiter a week later, he told me that the editor had extended an offer to another candidate (I had been told myself and one other person were in consideration) and they had accepted. The recruiter seemed shocked that the editor had never reached out to me and insisted I was on the shortlist, and profusely apologized at how I had been treated.
It was an extremely frustrating process that I wouldn't wish on anyone. I appreciate the recruiter's candidness with me through the entire thing, but am extremely frustrated (to put it lightly) with the editor. I was strung along for two months, not counting the time between applying and hearing from the recruiter. Being ghosted is one thing, but keeping me engaged for that long is one of the worst experiences I've ever dealt with.
There are many other personal reasons I am disappointed I was treated this way and did not get the position but I can not mention them because they would identify me.
There's not really any other way I can express this frustration other than submitting this review. So here it is.

Question 1
What's your current situation... are you trying to find a long-term position with salary and benefits?
The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Knoxville News Sentinel (Knoxville, TN) in Apr 2010
Interview
They were very professional in the interview process. I felt like that accurately described the job. There were no personal questions to speak of and I felt very comfortable conversing with them. Even though I didn't get the chance to work there, I would have seriously considered working for their establishment.
