      Entry-level Marketing Position Interview

      12 Mar 2014
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Villa Park, IL
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Lakeview (Villa Park, IL) in Oct 2013

      Interview

I was called for a first interview, which went well, they explained their history, a basic overview of the job and made it sound like an exciting, fast-paced, performance driven opportunity, exactly what I was looking for. It was fast, I think they were trying to get an overview of me and how I would fit in with their company, first interview lasted about 15 mins. I was called back for a second interview, and now knowing more about the company, I came prepared with questions to ask them. They pretty much told me how to answer each question and what the hiring manager wanted to hear. I did not work that way, I had very specific questions for them and I would answer how I best saw fit, not how I was instructed to answer. Here is the most important part of all this, they make it sound like a "marketing" position when in reality, you are selling windows, home improvement, home services (HVAC and the like) door to door! There is nothing in the way of real marketing (i.e. finding a direction, market share, market placement, long/short term goals) in this job, it's selling windows and doors either door-to-door or at places like Home Depot. My second interview was in fact, at a Home Depot. The manager I was assigned to told me they do very well here at this particular location, and during the interview a HD employee walked by, I asked him if he could take a minute to explain their success rate of having a Lakeview "marketing specialist" in their store, his reply was "what is Lakeview Marketing? I've been here 15 years and have never heard of them or seen you before" Red flag #1 right there. We got back to the main office and I knew this job would never be for me, but I went anyway, wanting to see what else they would have to say. I asked very specific questions about their company like customer aquisition costs/time, market growth and how the process could be improved, they had canned and rehearsed answers.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They asked me specific questions about whether I had kids, their ages and how they would do with me being away on weekends.
