I was called by HR asking if I could attend an interview within 24 hours, I agreed thinking this was all part of the F1 challenge. In hindsight, I should have requested more time to prep as in the end I was wholly unprepared for the interview. Apparently I was the first person they had lined up for interview, and it was my first interview externally for 10 years too so I got nervous and experienced some brain fog. There were no stages I was made aware of, just a teams video call. The interview was polite and cordial and I appreciated being asked on technical subjects as it helped me realize what preparation I need to do for other job applications in the future. So even though I didn’t get the role I feel like I learned and progressed and it was not a waste of my time, I’m not bitter about it, these things happen. I also began with to think during the interview process that certain aspects of the role were not for me, mainly the required overtime being unpaid due to the F1 spending cap, even if time is given back later and that I would be technical support for Linux desktop OS’ too. Anything Linux related I was told, if I am honest I prefer more defined role demarcations as anything Linux related is an incredibly vast area. As was said by the hiring manager the role needs to fit both the company and the person applying for a role, also I don’t think my memorised TCP/IP network knowledge is good enough. It would have been nice to have been given guidance prior to the interview in this area so I could brush up, its not difficult to understand just a lot to remember and relay back on a video call.
