Within 3-4 days of applying online, received a phone call from a jail employee to setup a face-to-face interview at the Milwaukee County Jail - Downtown. The interview was one-on-one and lasted approximately 8-10 minutes. Very basic questions (5 or 6) were asked. Several days later, an Investigator with the Sheriff's department contacted me to schedule a background investigation interview. I had to take fingerprints, get my photo taken and provide my id, transcripts, other misc requested documents. I was given forms to have previous employers complete and return to the investigator. Approximately 2 months later, I received a call from a county HR representative asking if I was still interested in the position. I accepted and had to go online to officially accept the offer. The next day I received information on scheduling my physical and drug test along with a letter from the Captain of the training academy with a training start date/instructions. I attended the Sheriff's Training Academy for 6 weeks and another couple of weeks on the job training. Training is not easy. No class has ever graduated with everyone, most lose 6-10 people. A lot of tests, scenarios to pass and structure like military boot camp. You stand at attention, salute, physical punishment (push-ups, flutter kicks ,etc) and have to wear a training uniform (supplied) throughout the duration.
