I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at MongoDB (San Francisco, CA) in June 2021
Interview
Have gone through the process twice, and it was generally the same framework each time.
First an outside recruiter hits you up. Then you talk to the hiring manager. Generally things are great at this point and everyone has been incredibly passionate about how great Mongo is to work for.
Then you take a test. They claim it's just to get a measure of where you're at and doesn't necessarily factor into their hiring decisions.
If you do well, they get excited. I did well and got a call from the hiring manager pretty pumped on moving me forward. I had a buddy that didn't do as well. He was excused from further interviews after the test.
From there you do a panel with local regional directors. And I've now gotten to this phase twice and been excused.
My general impression after being told they were not going to move forward the second time is Mongo seems to want to portray or actually does have an incredibly challenging sales culture.
They seem to want to hire people that desperately want to work there and only there. I have a hard time believing you're going to pull top performers away from their current closing role as they kiss your feet during the process. There are a lot of great companies and opportunities out there. Granted, I do believe Mongo is one of them, but it's one of a hundred.
It has the vibe of a fraternity. I was told that I did great in the interview, would be successful at Mongo, but the team wasn't convinced that I was 100% ready to make a move (which is accurate, because I hadn't seen a final offer to make a move... all about context. but I was interested, which I made very clear during our call).
The conclusion that I've come to is Mongo seems to hold sales people under a microscope and look at their every move on a day-to-day, hour-to-hour, minute-to-minute basis. The team is hesitant to hire folks who have been highly successful in more autonomous sales roles because of this.
Wish them all the best, but not a fit for me or most of the folks I've worked with in the valley.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
- Huge emphasis on sales process
- Turning sales into a science, not so much an art form.
- Want to see that you really, really want to be there.
- Want to see that you can stand up to difficult questions on the panel interview.
The hiring director was great to work with. However, the panel and final-stage interviews with the two other regional sales directors felt unwelcoming and condescending. They showed little interest in sales or discovery skills. The clear expectation is that you arrive as a product expert. Be prepared for an interview style that can feel dismissive if you can't match their technical product knowledge.

"tell me why you would or wouldn't prioritize this account"

Interview
The best hiring process I've ever done. Very detailed, complex and complete. Gives the company the opportunity to really understand the fit of the candidate and also gives the candidate the opportunity to understand the company way of work.

Question 1
The most common question is "Why MongoDB?" and don't think the answer is easy ;)
I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at MongoDB (Dubai) in Aug 2025
Interview
It was one of the strangest interview processes I’ve ever experienced. Instead of HR reaching out to me after my application, it was directly the sector manager. He said he wanted to have an initial interview, and so we did. It was more of a casual chat rather than a structured interview — we didn’t really go into background, strategy, or sales processes. To give you an idea of how casual it was: he occasionally checked his phone and even used one of those electronic cigarettes during the conversation.
At the end of the meeting, he mentioned there would be an assessment, which they would share with me, and that based on the results, the next steps would be decided. I completed the assessment, and during this time, we were even in contact via WhatsApp. After submitting it, I informed him as well.
After that, complete silence. All messages stopped. My questions went unanswered. My messages weren’t even read. I assumed the process was over (at least for me it was), but I still wanted to receive some feedback. Yet, no reply ever came. Not even an automated rejection notice :)
I was ghosted. Not exactly the most professional behavior.

Question 1
It was a casual talk. They asked my Bachelor, some of about my experience.
