      Backend Engineer Interview

      22 Mar 2022
      Anonymous employee
      Berlin
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at N26 (Berlin) in Mar 2022

      Interview

How did I apply for the position ? I applied through Linkedin. They were very quick to respond and they scheduled my "get to know you" interview with the recruiter. What to expect in "get to know you" interview? My recruiter was Eduardo, He was on time, professional and friendly. We had a discussion about my past experiences, my motive to join the company, salary expectations, job location preferences(Berlin, Vienna, Barcelona), reason for job change and notice period in current company. He then explained me the whole interview process and gave me time to ask questions. After this round he sent me an email confirmation of making to the next stage and also shared a preparation pack(It helped me a lot during whole interview process, It had information on what it's like to work at N26, work culture, interview tips and more). Next stage was a Codility test containing 3 questions(Leetcode easy/medium level). I had a week to complete it. I was able to solve all 3. After submitting the test I received an email confirmation of making to the next stage. The next stage was to complete Pair coding and Systems design exercises in real time with their Backend Engineers. Both Pair coding and Systems design interviews will take place separately on the same day as follows: Pair Coding Interview: 60 minutes Systems Design Interview: 60 minutes What to expect in "Pair Coding" interview? Two Senior Backend Engineers were there to take this interview. They were on time, professional and they made me feel comfortable by introducing themselves. There will be a Leetcode easy/medium level question and you will have to write the working code by sharing your screen. (They use Codility for this round) Be prepared to explain your approach and don't forget to discuss the time and space complexity of your solution. You should also discuss/cover all the corner cases and your code should not fail any such cases. What to expect in "Systems Design" interview? Two Senior Backend Engineers were there to take this interview. They were on time, professional and they made me feel comfortable by introducing themselves. There will be a few questions from your resume for about first 20 min. (ex. Describe your CI/CD pipeline, your current project, technologies which you are using etc..). Then they will give you one system design problem which you will have to discuss with them in 35 min(last 5 min will be kept for your questions). You will have to share your screen (They use Codility whiteboard for this round). Try to get the understanding/scope of the problem by asking questions to them. once the question is clear start discussing your approach and why you are choosing particular approach(pros/cons of your approach). :) tip - time is very critical in this round, try to use the time effectively, at last don't forget to summarise your approach) After completing both the round I received an email confirmation of making to the next stage. The next stage was a conversation with a Hiring Manager. The interview focuses on cultural and behavioural questions to assess the following: your attitude & approach towards engineering, how you handle situations, how you take ownership, and your individual contributions. What to expect in "Hiring Manager" round? Your future Manager will take this interview. He was on time, professional and he made me feel comfortable by introducing himself. Then we discussed about many things related to my role & responsibilities, business unit, work culture, team management etc.. At last he asked me 5 behavioural questions. This round took around 45 min. --- After 2 days I received an email from Eduardo confirming my selection for the role. He scheduled a call with me to discuss about the offer and next steps. I would like to thank Eduardo and Francisca for their help during the interview process. I had a very good experience. with N26. So, that's how I got my offer from N26.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Tell me about yourself. Why you are looking for a change? What is your salary expectations ? Why do you want to join N26 ? Pros and cons of Hibernate. What are the different stages of CI/CD pipeline? Few questions about Java 8 features. Two Sum. Parse the very big file of promo codes and store the data into DB. Every user should get a unique promo code. Disagreement with peer/manager. How do you handle challenges at work?

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at N26 (Berlin) in Mar 2026

      Interview

There were 3 technical rounds. First was a codility coding test. You can take it anytime within 7 days. Second was a Pair Coding Interview which involved live coding in front of 2 interviewers. Both interviewers were backend engineers but not seniors. Third was a design interview, where you have to draw a design on an online platform called Figma. In this one, your interviewers will be seniors.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

      (1) Codity questions (3 coding problems described below) : (1) You are given implementation of a function . This function, given a non-empty array A of N integers (sorted in non-decreasing order) and integer K, checks whether A contains numbers 1,2, ..., K (every number from 1 to K atleast once) and no other numbers. The goal of the exercise is to find and fix bug(s) in the implementation. (2) In 1 step, any element of a given array can be either increased or decreased by 1. Write a function that, given an array A of N integers, returns the minimum number of steps required to make all elements equal. (3) There are N arrows. The K-th arrow is rotated clockwise by A[K] degrees from an upward direction. In 1 move you can rotate 1 arrow clockwise or counter-clockwise by an arbitrary angle. What is the minimum sum of rotation angles needed to make all arrows point in the same direction. Write a function that, given an array A made of N integers, describing the initial rotation of each arrow, returns the minimum sum of rotation angles needed to make all arrows point in the same direction. (2) Coding interview: (1) code Leetcode easy level question. (3 Sum). (2) If a client sends invalid or unexpected input to a REST API, what should the API ideally return? (3) What are sealed interfaces? When / why do we use it? (4) if a rest api needs to return null to the client, should it return a simple null or return an object of type Optional ? When to use Optional? What are the benefits of using Optional? If the type of input from the client is not as expected, would you prefer to return a null, or an error message or an empty collection? (5) If a variable is of type Optional, do we still need to perform a null check before calling methods on it? What happens if we don't? Error or warning? (3) Design interview (1) Design a new user registration system, including the email verification/confirmation flow.

      Backend Engineer Interview

      4 Feb 2025
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at N26 in Jan 2025

      Interview

5 stages in total. First stage is a screening call with a recruiter with regular questions about previous experiences and expectations about the role. Second stage is a codility challenge that includes 3 problems involving DSA, I found this one to be harder than I thought with the problems involving DP but they only aim for 67% correctness. Third stage was a pair coding session with two engineers where I had to solve a small technical problem. The problem was of medium difficulty with follow-up questions on how to handle edge cases. Fourth stage was a System Design interview with two engineers. The problem presented wasn't super hard and was mainly focused on async communication between microservices and scalability. Fifth stage was behavioural interview with two engineering managers that involved a lot of "Tell me about a time when" questions. It was mainly focused on handling shifts in priorities and feedback culture. In the end they decided to move with another candidate because I didn't want to relocate to Berlin, even though I made it very clear from the first interview that this was not an option for me and they said it was ok not to relocate. Complete waste of time and totally unprofessional.
