      Space Planner Interview

      20 Apr 2025
      Anonymous employee
      Boston, MA
      Accepted offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at New Balance (Boston, MA) in Sept 2023

      Interview

The interview process overall was very typical. I had a phone screen with an HR Recruiter then a MS Teams Interview with the Hiring Manager & an affiliated Associate. However pleasant the representatives seemed in demeanor, I was largely disappointed with the overall content of the interview process. From screen phone call to job offer and salary negotiation, I was lowballed my asking salary of $75K which according to my research was average for the position and required living wage to be local in person (which was a demand of the position). By the time I was offered the job (appox 8 weeks) I had temporarily moved half way across the country and was denied a Move Package. The HR Representative I worked with spent more effort insisting I had "Okayed" a lower salary based on my go ahead when it was disclosed during the preliminary screen call. The final offer I got it to was insistently short of my asking salary by an arbitrary $200. During my singular video interview, the Hiring Manager (Senior Manager and my would be supervisor) was significantly late to start which got the interview started at a strange cadence & power dynamic. The questions were very typical regarding my previous experience- I was very candid that since my background was in Design the fit of the role of Space Planner was not my long term intention with NB but rather to use it as an opportunity to explore the Footwear Industry post graduate degree. I was told this intention to network would be entirely possible with the caveat that I would most likely get bored in the position as I was overqualified. This didn't particularly deter me at the time because networking is a big job in and of itself on top of the outlined job functions. The other Managerial Associate present in the interview did not give overly specific illustrations regarding day to day life in the department when asked. In retrospect I probably would have preferred to conduct the interview in person even if it mandated travel. The Key Issue that was largely omitted from my interview process that would snowball into an issue that effected both my intention to network and the implications of my job function was a clear avoidance of addressing internal company conflict with Return to Office. I would quickly discover this lie by omission would make my goals nearly impossible as very little people were ever available in person to network with at any of the office locations. Over the course of my 8 Month stretch in the role, I realized my salary was bare minimum required to live comfortably as a single adult in downtown Boston and throughout the entire experience, I did't even manage to add a single dollar to my savings account.
