      Payroll Specialist Interview

      7 Mar 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Norman, OK
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Nextep (Norman, OK) in Feb 2022

      Interview

1st Interview--Someone conducted what seemed like a screening interview over the phone to ensure I met basic requirements for the role. 2nd Interview--This was an interview with two mid-level management employees that was conducted over Google meets. 3rd Interview--This was an interview with two upper level management employees conducted over Google meets. I was also required to complete a personality analysis prior to this interview. All interviews consisted of expected questions and there were no unique or surprising inquiries posed. I felt like all went well and I left with a positive feeling following each step. The biggest criticisms I have are regarding my inquiry about the expected pay for the role and how I found out I didn't get an offer. Regarding the pay--on the job posting there was a pay range that was listed but I knew, through a friend who works at Nextep and referred me to the job, that that pay range was no longer accurate as the base pay was currently higher than what was listed on the posting. In the 1st interview I asked about the updated pay range as well as what someone with my experience (6yrs in payroll) could expect. The first interviewer said they weren't certain about what the answer would be and said she would pass along the question to those conducting the 2nd interview so they can answer more accurately. In the 2nd interview I posed the same question regarding the pay scale and what someone like me could expect as my pay. The interviewer remarked that they had seen the question noted by the first interviewer but admitted she had not looked at my resume and was not able to provide a clear answer. I was then asked what I was expecting to get paid and I threw out a figure without any real reference of what the updated pay scale was for the role. I also received this same answer in the 3rd interview (though I was not asked to give an amount). I knew upper management may not be the ones that actually that information but I was hoping that the information had been passed along. All-in-all it felt like they were avoiding telling me what I could expect to be paid because they didn’t want to commit to paying me what my experience would warrant. The other complaint I have is the method by which I found out I didn't get the offer. All three interviews took place across 11 days. The final interview took place on a Tuesday and I was told a mid-level management employee would make a decision the next day (Wednesday). The following Monday I reached out to the only contact I had--the first interviewer--to inquire about an update. I didn’t receive a reply. On that same day I also checked their website and saw the Payroll Specialist posting had been removed. On the Wednesday following my first inquiry I reached out again but still received no reply. I came to the conclusion I was not chosen on Monday when I saw the job posting had been removed but I wanted to give them the chance to tell me directly. However, they chose to go silent on me. At the time this is being posted it has been two weeks since I was told a decision would be made regarding my employment application. Through talking to friends who interviewed and did not receive an offer as well as reading reviews here on Glassdoor this seems to be a common occurrence--not informing candidates they were not chosen but rather just going silent. This is unprofessional and is in stark contrast to everything else I have learned about this company though Glassdoor, friends who work there, and the interviews themselves. Nextep still seems like a very desirable place to work but the lack of professional courtesy in letting candidates know they were not hired leaves a sour taste in my mouth. This is a small item but it can definitely affect the perception of the company as a whole. I would suggest that some standard process be put in place to ensure both chosen and unchosen candidates are informed simultaneously regarding the hiring decision being made. To 'ghost' candidates conveys a lack of professional courtesy and respect that is definitely not in line with the standards Nextep holds itself to in all other areas.

      Interview

I was approached by a talent acquisition specialist via LinkedIn. The interview process was really smooth and actually pretty fun! There’s were three interviews. The first was an initial phone screening, then an in person interview with the director supervisor, and lastly, there was an in person interview with upper management/leadership.
