I applied online. The process took 4 months. I interviewed at North Carolina Aquariums
Interview
Interview itself was very standard for husbandry in the industry. Nitrogen cycle, life support, etc etc. There were a few specific questions that came up like how would I train certain animals, what kind of enrichment I would offer, etc. What WASN'T great was the follow up. The entire hiring process took over 3 months between my initial offer to interview, and the actual formal offer. The whole reason for that is because it works through the state. The facility isn't in charge of who they hire - the state is. So the state can decide if the candidate the site chooses is or is not acceptable regardless of what the site managers say. People who didn't even participate in the interview process can decide if you get hired or rejected. It's a dirty system that's easy to abuse if you know the right people.
I applied in-person. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at North Carolina Aquariums (Manteo, NC) in Apr 2015
Interview
Downloaded the job application online and mailed in the next day. After 2 weeks, they called me to schedule for an phone interview (it was scheduled on a Sunday morning which is nice). It was not really difficult interview and they needed extra help. The whole interview lasted about 30 minutes. The very next morning, they called me and offered me the internship.
