I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual (Gurnee, IL) in June 2009
Interview
Had an interview, which seemingly went well. The HR recruiter seemed to like me and the interview itself lasted over an hour. Was given 2 profile assessments to take from home at the end of my interview and had company information e-mailed to me as an attachment. All good signs. Was told that once my assessments were received, the HR recruiter would e-mail me to tell me what happened next, regardless of if they wanted to set-up another interview or if they wanted to tell me that I wasn't a good fit. Never heard back. Pretty unethical if you ask me.
Overall, seemed like a great opportunity with a reputable company. Not just selling to your family and friends. My opinion, however, took a turn for the worse when they didn't get back to me when they said they would.
There were four or five interviews, if you count the meeting with my future mentor. There were also a few personality assessments. Lots of paperwork. The finance industry is tightly regulated.
The first interview was easygoing and went fairly well. We talked a little on myself and what northwestern was all about. Because they wanted to see how I could fit in to their team and what I would bring.

Interview
The process was smooth and straight forward. A lot of behavioral based questions, but relaxed and low stress. First phase is a phone screening followed by a teams or in person meeting.
