"Disappointing Interview Experience Reflects Poor Organizational Culture"
Oakland Schools’ interview process left much to be desired and raised serious red flags about the organization's culture and priorities. The first step in their process is a one-way video interview through SparkHire, where applicants are required to record answers to pre-set questions without any real-time human interaction.
This approach feels impersonal and transactional, especially for a public education organization that should value communication, equity, and human-centered practices. The use of a one-way video system seems to prioritize efficiency over empathy, and it strips away the opportunity for dialogue, clarification, or even basic human connection.
Not only is this method demoralizing, but it also gives the impression that the organization is more interested in filtering people out quickly than truly understanding their qualifications or perspectives. If the first impression of a workplace is that you're talking to a camera instead of a person, it says a lot about how they might operate internally; distant, bureaucratic, and possibly tone-deaf to inclusive hiring practices.
If Oakland Schools wants to attract top talent, especially in education and support roles that require interpersonal skills, they need to rethink this process. Interviewing should be a two-way street, not a cold audition. This experience ultimately reflected what I can only assume is a broader issue with organizational values and culture.
Advice to Management:
Reevaluate the use of SparkHire for initial interviews. Consider investing in real conversations that allow candidates to engage with your team. This will better reflect your mission, your commitment to equity, and your respect for the people applying to work with you.

Question 1
You’re given only 1 to 3 minutes to read the question, and then exactly 1 minute to record your response — with zero retakes. That’s it.
There were multiple rounds of interviews with several current team members present in each round. Required to perform a mock consultancy task for all consultant positions which is quick challenging for most interviewees.
I applied in-person. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Oakland Schools in Nov 2022
Interview
The interview process went great.
After I was offered the position, it was nothing but confusion and miscommunication. I asked multiple times for an offer in-writing. This has never been an issue with any of the school districts I’ve worked with previously, but the hiring associate would not provide an offer in writing until a start date had been established. I was not comfortable giving notice with my current employer without an offer in writing. I had also found out that my hiring contact had reached out to my current supervisor with the expectation that I start in less than two weeks. This was incredibly unprofessional and unacceptable.
I was expected to get fingerprinted, although my prints are still active . When I asked why, the hiring contact was unable to give me a response. I received an email at 6:45 pm outlining the expectation that I be fingerprinted the next day- less than 24 hours notice. I was unavailable as I had a job and had not given notice as there was no offer in writing.
The last straw was when I received an email stating that I needed to provide 5 references and email them a 30 question long review of my work as an employee. I had 24 hours to complete this task, which was sent to me less than a day before a national holiday. I also received an email on Thanksgiving Day.
With the unnecessary expectations, lack of understanding of public school hiring practices, poor communication, and overall unprofessionalism, I made the decision to withdraw my acceptance.
