      Software Engineer Interview

      21 Apr 2020
      Anonymous employee
      Los Angeles, CA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Oblong Industries (Los Angeles, CA) in Jan 2016

      Interview

Challenging but rewarding... I learned a lot about the g-speak framework from the extendo-box programming tasks that tested knowledge of C++ and the interviewee's ability to adapt to the company's platform. Great interviewers.

      Question 1

In addition to a series of interviews throughout the day, they asked me to solve a series of programming tasks in the g-speak Platform / Spatial Operating Environment

      Interview

Phone screen with a simple coding question followed by an onsite. The onsite had 3 standard programming interviews and one longer coding exercise. For the coding exercise, I had to work on a computer and make changes to a toy application.

Programming exercise on a computer with several small questions. All were relatively straightforward but required reading a little bit of code

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Oblong Industries in Dec 2016

      Interview

After applying for a developer position a recruiter reached out to me and we had a general discussion about my experience/skills. I then had two technical phone screens. During these technical phone screens i answered various questions surrounding my specific experiences as relevant to the position. We also covered several coding approach questions that were meant to make me demonstrate my thought and design process. After that I was brought on site for an all day interview to meet with several team members/managers as well as complete a coding exercise in Oblong's platform. The meetings were fairly generic with a mix of questions including problem solving. The coding exercise was based on Oblong's g-speak platform and required a strong understanding of C++, the ability to search through their API documentation (which was actually very helpful), and ability to ask an Oblong team member questions about the exercise and platform. At the end I discussed my solution and approach with the Oblong team member.

      Software Engineer Interview

      19 Mar 2017

      Los Angeles, CA

      Positive experience

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Oblong Industries (Los Angeles, CA) in Dec 2016

      Interview

The first part of the interview process was a phone call, where I got to talk to one of the software engineer leads. It involved discussions about my past experiences, life at Oblong, and a simple coding exercise. Then, I was invited to do an onsite interview at their headquarters in Los Angeles. The onsite interview was really unique and felt well designed compared to the other interview experiences that I have had. While it contained the traditional algorithmic, whiteboard coding exercises that are used by most companies for a software engineering position, it also consisted of a coding challenge on an actual computer. It was a fairly open ended challenge that allowed me to make design choices, that I later had to rationalize during a brief code review. The onsite interview was pretty exhausting though. It went from 10am - 5pm and included a nice lunch, but I think that's fair since that gave both parties a better idea on whether or not I would be a good fit. Overall, it was a great experience and I would, and have, recommended friends to apply.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Leetcode.com style algorithm questions on a whiteboard and a 'real' coding challenge related to the specific position I was applying to.

Thank you for the feedback and for the referrals! Referrals are a heartening sign that our people like working here. We understand that the day spent onsite is long - between the technical conversations, the coding exercise and the fabulous lunch from our chef, there is just a lot to take in and get through. What makes it worth it is that by the end of the day, both the candidate and Oblong have a really good understanding of each other and whether it makes sense to move forward.
