      Assistant Merchant Interview

      22 June 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Sunderland, VT
      Declined offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Orvis Company (Sunderland, VT) in June 2019

      Interview

I applied online during the summer and completed a phone interview a week later. Luckily, one of the merchants on the team was in town and wanted to meet, so I was also able to have a more casual one-on-one at a coffee shop before flying into Vermont for the final interview around two weeks later. The final interview consisted of two interviews with three employees each, a lunch break with an employee who had just moved to Vermont, and a meeting with HR. The interviews were a mix of behavioral and specific questions regarding merchandising. In each of my interviews, they tried to gauge how I would feel about living in Vermont, specifically in the area the office is located in. After the interview, I went on an arranged tour of their rod manufacturing facility, which was only a minute away from where I was staying for the interview. Overall, the interview process was very positive. Emails and questions were responded to quickly, the interviews were scheduled promptly one after the other, and I noticed that my interviewers had both my resume and cover letter printed out with them during the final interview, which gives me hope that the cover letter was actually read when my application was sent in. My interviewers were friendly, and I felt that I could have a good conversation with them during my interviews. The position would have been a perfect fit had another opportunity not come up suddenly at the end of this interview process. As a recent college grad and having interviewed at four other larger companies before this one, this has been the best and smoothest process that I've had.
