The interview focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) rather than experience with donors or fundraising. The interviewers asked pre-prepared questions, creating a non-conversational atmosphere, and intentionally used up the entire 30-minute time slot. Despite being a gay man, I felt that I didn't fit the desired demographic for them, and the interviewers seemed uninterested in my answers to their 10 predetermined questions. When I asked about the size of the portfolio, gift ranges, and methods for cultivating and upgrading donors, the interviewers responded with awkward pauses and annoyance. One interviewer replied, "Why not?" when I asked, "What made you decide to work for Planned Parenthood?" This was followed by an awkward pause, giving the impression that they were thinking, "Next." It was disheartening to realize that my preparation and enthusiasm were met with such indifference, suggesting that the organization had already made up their mind about who they wanted to hire.
