      Android Engineer Interview

      15 Mar 2013
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Pocket Change in Mar 2013

      Interview

Initial phone interview with their HR person, and what a disaster! First off she said that she requires a take-home coding challenge. I very rarely do those because they always end up taking a lot of time and effort, and frankly most companies are not interesting enough to me to warrant that effort early in the process. I'm willing to invest as much time as the client is by which I mean that I will spend as much time on phone and on-site interviews as they like because both parties then have skin in the game. OK, so she said let's move past that for the moment, which was probably the smart thing to do. Unfortunately we got into a big argument about what exactly the job entails. She asked if I understood what makes Pocket Change different from other Android development jobs and I said "sure, you produce a library that game developers and others use to incorporate into their apps". She replied "No, we build the entire Android platform" and wanted to know if I had ever done that. I told her that I've poked around in the Android source code but never built Android itself and don't see why you would need to do that. I think she simply didn't know the difference between the Android platform and the PocketChange platform (I.E. SDK). I spent a good amount of time describing SDKs, jar files and such but I think we ended up with each of us thinking that the other one doesn't know what they are talking about. Those two big issues were not even the only things that created friction. Needless to say, neither party was interested in exploring the opportunity any further. That appeared to be about the only thing that we agreed upon.
