      Content and Communications Strategist Interview

      10 Apr 2026

      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Poka (Mississauga, ON) in Mar 2026

      Interview

The people I dealt with were professional and genuinely engaged throughout — HR, hiring manager, and VP were all good to speak with. No complaints there. But the process itself is worth describing clearly for anyone considering applying. Three rounds, including a strategy deck assignment presented to the hiring manager and VP. After that presentation I received an email with salary and start date, which I took as an offer in good faith. I submitted personal information, including ID and address. Then a second assignment arrived. I completed it. A week passed. Then came a call: the CRO had reviewed the role and now wanted someone more senior. The role was effectively gone. I wasn’t even given a chance to reapply. I’m not questioning anyone’s intentions. Organizational dynamics are messy and real. But there’s a basic standard I’d apply to any working relationship: don’t exchange salary figures, start dates, and personal information with someone unless you’re prepared to stand behind it. It’s the “how you treat waitstaff” problem. Applicants invest real time and real effort, especially when asked to complete strategy assignments. That investment deserves the same respect you’d give a paying customer. Good people. The process needs significant work.

Thank you for taking the time to share a thoughtful and balanced review. We really appreciate the way you’ve described both the people you met and the experience overall. You’re absolutely right to call out the process here. We fell short, particularly in communicating next steps and in creating the impression of an offer before a final decision had been fully aligned internally. That’s on us. We also recognise the time and effort involved in completing assignments and progressing through multiple stages. Changing direction so late in the process, especially after discussing salary, start date, and collecting personal information, is not the experience we aim to provide, and we understand the frustration and disappointment this caused. As you mentioned, internal priorities did shift at a senior level, but we should have managed this far more carefully and avoided putting you in that position altogether. We’re reviewing our hiring processes to ensure clearer decision-making upfront, tighter alignment before final-stage conversations, and better respect for candidates time and effort. Thank you again for your feedback. It’s been taken seriously!
