I had an interview with the COO of the company. She mentioned it was the first time they were hiring for this position -no one had ever held the role before - so they weren’t entirely sure what it would look like. The interview itself was really open-ended; she asked me to look at the job description and explain how I fit the bill. Most of the qualifications were technical (for example, knowledge of SQL), so I focused on explaining how I met those. But she kept saying she wasn’t a technical person and told me not to go too in-depth. It was a bit confusing, since it was a senior engineering position, yet I was being interviewed by someone with no technical background. In hindsight, I think she just wanted someone who could confidently sell themselves rather than dive into the technical details, so I probably shouldn’t have spent so much time talking about my actual work experience. It also felt like a bit of a red flag - they probably want this position to cut costs but don’t really know what they want from it and are just testing it out. She said she’d contact me two weeks after the interview, whether I passed or not, and that the next stages would consist of a panel interview and another CEO interview - but she never did.
