      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      7 Aug 2025
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Redpanda Data in May 2025

      Interview

I started interviewing for a senior role which got filled after 2 interview rounds - 1 with HM and 1 C++ round. Then I was asked if i'd be interested to interview for a Software engineer role. Then I had another C++ round, HM round and a take home assignment using Seastar. The assignment is real fun! Throughout, the interviewers were really nice and spoke as if they were genuinely keen. They said they had another interviewer ahead of me in process and made me hurry with the rounds. After the assignment presentation, had a culture-fit round and then they ghosted me for a week. Then came back and mumbled something that said they chose someone else, citing NO reason. I was fine with the rejection, but wanted feedback. After all, I have engaged with them for nearly 5-6 rounds! You don't need 5 rounds to "ghost" someone as unworthy. Absolute waste of time. Please don't interview with them.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Better know the nuts and bolts of C++, they will ask it all.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We’re really sorry to hear that the process felt long and unclear, and that you didn’t get the feedback you were hoping for after putting in so much effort. That’s not the experience we want candidates to have. We know interviews can take a lot of time and energy, and we truly appreciate the work you put into each stage. We’re glad to hear you enjoyed the Seastar assignment, but we apologise for not doing a better job communicating along the way and providing closure at the end. Your feedback is a good reminder for us to keep improving how we run interviews and how we treat candidates throughout the process. We’re grateful you took the time to apply and spend time with our team, and we wish you the best in your next steps.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Redpanda Data

      Interview

Recruiter call, then a C++-specific interview where I was asked about class constructors and move semantics, then a coding interview. I was told by the recruiter that all interviews would be in C++ so that was fine... except the coding interview required the use of an obscure C function (not C++, C), which I didn't know so naturally they passed on me. Left a bad taste in my mouth, the interview seemed more like they were testing if I knew that specific function instead of my actual coding abilities. Sad, it seems like a good place to work, but I'm hesitant to go through that again.

      Question 1

C++ move semantics, copy/move contructor differences
