I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Rippling (New York, NY) in July 2025
Interview
- 4/24: Automated email rejection after applying for Staff Full Stack Engineer (Frontend)
- 8/24: Applied again and then automated email rejection after applying for Staff Full Stack Engineer (Frontend)
- 6/25: Recruiter reaches out via email with subject line "Staff SWE, Company Onboarding Team @ Rippling (SF & NYC)". I respond to the recruiter. I receive no response. I respond one more time a few days later. No response. Ghosted.
- 7/25: Different recruiter reaches out on LinkedIn with subject line "Staff Engineering Opportunities at Rippling". I respond. Strangely, no calendar link / platform or scheduling assistant, but instead back and fourths on LinkedIn to agree on a time that works for both of us for a call. I proceed to take the call. The recruiter was quite pleasant and happy to provide any info. She proceeded to coordinate the scheduling of a technical interview.
- 7/25: "Technical Interview". This involved a Zoom call with an interviewer who was an engineering manager from a different team that this role would fall under. Out of the gate, I don't think that's good at all. Ideally the interviewer would represent the team interest on a fit. This interview involved live coding a challenge using React. The first thing that was really odd, was how this supposed staff level role would be expected to utilize JavaScript, when in this era (for a while now), TypeScript is the standard and would provide the best understanding of real world programming. The interviewer didn't understand what a schema is and at the beginning of the live coding test, as I read through the code that needed to be populated, I was admittedly very thrown off by the incorrect terminology usage (for example, "schema" was actually intended to be a value in the challenge). The interviewer was rude and exhibited a lack of experience in React, fundamental JavaScript and people. I don't think the level of the interviewer is that crucial, however the rudeness is simply unacceptable and reflects Rippling as an organization.
