      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Roofstock in Sept 2018

      Interview

Overall, the interview process was long, unorganized, and disappointing. I applied and a PM followed up and remained the key contact / hiring manager. After an initial phone screen, I was given a take-home design challenge. I then went onsite to present and meet a few folks as well. I was there from the morning til the afternoon and lunch was not part of the interview schedule so it was very awkward to see everyone eating, interviewers included (but not me). For the presentation, one of the folks paid more attention to his phone (he was also very late to the presentation and then left early). It didn't seem like everyone was aware there would be a presentation. I got an invitation from the PM to go onsite for a second round to meet some engineers and the head of product. The PM said it wasn't a formal conversation but that he just wanted me to chat with them so I can get an idea of who I would be working with. I went onsite and all the engineers seemed to be testing my knowledge on development so I was really confused as to what I was interviewing for. For example, I was asked how I would structure my code for a specific layout, what the biggest file size for an image should be, and other questions that I don't find relevant to the role I applied for. I did ask the interviewers for clarification as to what I'm being interviewed for and they just told me they were instructed to test my technical skills. It was very unorganized and unstructured and random questions were thrown at me. At the end, I talked to the PM to get some clarification on what role I'm interviewing for and he said that they just wanted to make sure I had the technical skills even though this would still be a design role. Still, makes no sense. The PM said HR would be in contact in the next couple of days to discuss compensation and next steps. I actually didn't hear back for a couple weeks and I followed up multiple times. Eventually I got an automated message from the PM that included "After reviewing your work and experience, we've made the decision to not move forward at this time." I replied to the PM and expressed my disappointment in the interview process and he replied saying he would send a personalized email with feedback. He never did. Note: When I applied and interviewed, there were no designers on the team so you won't be talking to any during the interview process. It seems like they all left earlier this year.

      Interview

There were multiple interviews involved. The first interview was a call with a recruiter followed by an interview with the design manager. I was given a design challenge to redesign the "About Us" page with a week's deadline. After I had individual interviews with different members of the product design department and one group meeting. The overall process took about roughly 4 weeks.

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Roofstock (San Francisco, CA) in Dec 2020

      Interview

Though the interview process for this role called for a 2-3 month bandwidth, it was a positive learning experience that gave me insight about my skillset. The talent recruiter was kind to offer thorough guidance, and answer all questions I had to prepare for each round. The process had a total of 4 rounds, followed by a short design test and a post-final interview check in. I felt that the test was fair and the expectations were straightforward.

Thank you for your feedback. We are happy to hear that the recruiter was there to guide you through the interview process. While thorough, we structure our interview process to give the interviewee and interviewers enough time to get to know each other and ensure that this opportunity will benefit everyone involved. With that said, we are thrilled to welcome you to the team and look forward to growing together!
