      Senior Research Scientist Interview

      14 July 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Neutral experience

      Application

I applied through university. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Saint-Gobain (New York, NY) in June 2018

      Interview

I met an HR recruiter at a poster session at my university where I was presenting my research. This interaction led to an on campus interview and I was referred on to the next phase. From there I was contacted by an HR representative who scheduled a phone interview between me and an R&D director. This was an incredibly positive experience, and I was recommended for an onsite interview. The onsite interview consisted of a 45 min HR interview, a 45 min presentation that I gave about my research with 15 min of Q&A, and then 45 min interviews with 7 R&D team leaders/directors. It was a very long day and I had a lot of mixed experiences. Some of the people were very nice while others were almost accusatory and aggressive. I wouldn't call it an exceedingly difficult interview, most questions were just trying to prove how you problem solve and if you would work well on the team. That being said, it was a very long day. I would say my on campus interview was an overall positive experience. About an hour after leaving the location, I got a call from HR to set up another phone interview with an additional R&D director the following week. This was by far the worst interview I have ever had. The interviewer was very rude and aggressive. I was very upfront with what my background and expertise was, and he was the director of the division I was least qualified for. Several times during our interview he told me he didnt like my answers or they were too vague and not what he wanted to hear. Not surprisingly, 2 weeks later I was contacted to say I had not received an offer. They said they would consider me for other positions in other departments in the future, but after that phone interview I have no interest. There are some truly wonderful scientists that work there, and I had some of the most interesting discussions on my research I've had during my job search with many of the directors, but there were definitely a handful of directors who are very abrasive and unpleasant
