Product Management - Digital Banking Interview

      26 July 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Kuala Lumpur
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Shopee (Kuala Lumpur) in July 2022

      Interview

Interview Position: Product Management - Digital Banking (Shopee MY) * Review is ONLY for 1st round of interview with Shopee recruiter. It was a pleasant experience when it started with my self-introduction, skillset, working experience, work related etc. Not until later I was told that the job scope includes UAT testing for the product, which was not included in the JD that the recruiter sent me when the recruiter first approached me via LinkedIn. Hence, I politely declined when the recruiter asked if I was willing to perform testing, as I refuse to be involved in extensive testing (My current position is Business Analyst, and current company has a QA Department, where I am not required to be performing any extensive testing, only require minimal unit testing). After I declined, the recruiter clearly shown changes in attitude. The recruiter proceeded to ask me some HR questions which I was no longer comfortable with as I have declined to proceed with the application, but I continued to answer as polite as I could. The trigger point was the recruiter asked for my expected salary and after I answered it, the recruiter was asking for a specific reason of why the ask for a huge increase, I justified that it wasn’t a very big increase and explained the calculation, but the recruiter continued asking, which I find it absolutely disrespectful and unprofessional. Feedback: The People Team (Recruiter) in Shopee MY may require further professional training of not emphasising on the candidate’s expected salary. It could be possible that your company budget for the position is not high enough or it’s not aligned with the current market salary range, but please be professional not to stress the candidate on his/her expected salary. The ask of expected salary is to seek whether it’s within your budget but does not grant you the permission to further cut down on your budget just because the candidate’s expected salary is much higher than his/her current salary because the candidate could be already underpaid. One thing positive about the interview was the recruiter did send a follow-up email to inform the outcome of the interview.
