      Interview

Told at the last minute that needed to be in the office for 3 days a week minimum - wasted my time and theirs. Nice people but didn't seem very transparent on process

Thanks for your feedback! We've always been very transparent on our hybrid policy being 2-3 days per week. We've found that during onboarding, new joiners tend to be more successful when they come in more often so they can get up to speed faster learning from being with their colleagues.

      Software Engineer Interview

      18 June 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Signal AI in May 2022

      Interview

      - Brief chat with Recruiter - Hour interview with EM and Engineer (Easy going) - Take-home project to build a UI for an API from two 2d wireframe mockups I was instructed not to spend more than 3-to-4-hours on the take-home, but when I got the feedback on the task, the negative feedback was all around having not completed the implied features, that things weren't perfectly as per the monochrome 2d wireframes (trivial crap like the list I made was in 4 columns, rather than 3), lack of error handling, lack of documentation (??). No software engineer I've come across in my 15 years of professional experience would realistically be able to stand up a fresh project, interpret the mockups, investigate the APIs, implement the designs and functionality completely, with error handling, cover with tests, and write documentation (whatever that is supposed to be?) in the suggested 4-hours, unless they've practiced speed running the exercise, or lie about the time spent. I'm sure that other candidates must have delivered better and more complete solutions than mine, else I wouldn't have gotten the feedback about lack of completeness. But don't ask candidates to spend 4 hours on it if you're expecting to see over 4 hours worth of work -- it's just a waste of everyones time and ultimately reflects more on Signal AI's hiring practices and ethos than the quality of candidates themselves.
