      Head of Marketing Interview

      25 Aug 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at SimplyInsured (San Francisco, CA) in July 2017

      Interview

The recruiter set up an initial phone screen then got cancelled at last minute. Set up again a week later and invited me to speak with CEO next week. The CEO didn't call. Followed up with the recruiter, she responded 2 days later with rescheduling. Had a short chat with CEO and was invited to a dinner a week later. Had a dinner with CEO, another co-founder and recruiter. In general, they're pretty nice and answered most of my questions about their business. In the end, the CEO mentioned he would inform me the next step within a day or 2. Didn't hear from them in a week. Followed up. The recruiter sent out a standard rejected email a few days later. Not terrible experience in terms of startup environment but it would be nicer if people could hold their words.

      Interview

I really enjoyed the entire process and meeting the team at SimplyInsured. The team including the CEO Vivek seem incredibly bright and driven and will likely be a very successful startup in their continued growth. They have good vision of how best to grow and also seem to be a fun group who value work/life balance and company culture while performing at a very high level. If not for some change in circumstances in my personal life I would have accepted and I have no doubt would be happy in the role right now. The Process: Connected on AngelList and began the interview process starting with setting up a screening call. Screening call went well with ample time for both sides to explore the fit. This led to a dinner with CEO and two others on the team - 2.5 hours In person session with prepared content (reused existing strategy with tailored approach to first 30/100 days). - 5.5 hours. All in all very excited by the opportunity and the team but due to personal circumstances was not able to accept.

      Question 1

After some shadowing and basic knowledge, we explored how to best grow and begin to get ROI from new outbound channels. Would not have been an easy question for a junior Marketer.

      Interview

Process: One hour phone screen 2.5 hour dinner 5 hour assignment (data review, marketing tactic implementation, and 100 day marketing plan 5.5 hour in office interview Feedback: They mentioned that this was their first time hiring a marketer and it was clear. If you are hiring an experienced marketer, you can ask to see their previous work instead of asking for home work and ideas. Culture fit is important here. They seen a bit cultish. A young person that is willing to "figure things out" would be a good fit here. They don't have an experienced product person, but they only want their marketer to focus on awareness/the top of the funnel. It is my sense that they don't really understand what it takes to get a startup to become a household name. I am not sure that want someone to get them there. They are looking for the they thing that will move the needle, not a holistic approach to marketing. They offer lunch in the day long interview, but it is hard to eat when you are talking. I would recommend breaking that part of the interview up and have the candidate meet the full team after the key people have decided if they want to work with the person. I was tired and hungry by 2pm and could have used a 30 min break to eat and get some fresh air.
