I applied in-person. I interviewed at Slalom in Aug 2019
Interview
I think Slalom is a great company. They have great reviews and I think a part of the reason they are starting to see tremendous growth is because of the talent they retain. I was a little surprised by the interview process, I was looking for a more thoughtful, concise and professional interview process. Here are the problems that I noticed.
1. Slalom was not prepared for the interview - My interview was scheduled on a Monday. When I got to the offer there was no receptionist at the front desk, so I stood in the lobby of the suite until someone noticed me.
2. I was supposed to be interviewed by 2 people. A devops engineer and an architect Neither were available - On my email invite there were 2 names I was supposed to meet with. One was out which was the devops engineer. There was no replacement. I ended up interviewing with a person who had neither of those titles.
3. A Full stack engineer interviewed me for a Devops Position - This by far was the strangest interview I've had. Why would a full stack engineer do an hour interview with a devops engineer? The questions that were asked were purely development and architecture focused.
I received alot of detailed design questions and migration and pure development questions. While devops does encompass some of these strategies the person interviewing only spoke to a few devops tools and methodologies. I was able to answer the questions with somewhat accuracy only because I had multiple certs and remembered reviewing some of the materials in the associate level certifications.
Moving forward: I still think Slalom is a great company and still would consider applying for some future roles. I am afraid that the rapid growth may be hendering their attention to detail, which may affect the level of talent that retain and may also cause some overlap in roles, which will affect overall productivity.
