      Embedded Controls Engineer Interview

      8 Aug 2018
      Anonymous employee
      Wilmington, MA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Symbotic (Wilmington, MA) in July 2018

      Interview

I was contacted on linkedin by the internal recruiting team of Symbotic. I had an active linkedin profile, but I had only just started to look for a new job a few days prior. I jumped at the chance to take part in a phone interview. This was initially just supposed to be just a screening, but the individual who first contacted me on linkedin was just leaving for a vacation. So instead it became a slightly technical interview, and was conducted instead by the engineering manager in charge of the role. The next day, I was asked if I could come in for an in-person interview, which was scheduled for just three days after the initial phone conversation. This didn't give much time to prepare, but it was nice to know that they were eager to move the process along quickly. The on-site interview lasted about 3-4 hours, and consisted of talking to six people. First the hiring manager gave me a tour of their offices, and gave me a rundown of the company culture. Next I had a panel discussion with four of their engineers. This consisted mainly of going over my resume, and talking about previous work. Two of these engineers then left, and the remaining two put me through a whiteboard coding exercise. Afterwards, the first two engineers came back (the two who put me through the coding exercise left), and asked me questions about control theory. Finally, I spoke one-on-one with the director for all embedded controls teams. This again consisted mostly of going over my resume, and discussing my previous experience. I was officially offered the position a few days later. Overall the interview was very pleasant. The engineers on the team were all clearly very smart, but none of them seemed to have a know-it-all attitude, or big ego. In my experience that's a rare combination.
