I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Tesla (Sparks, NV) in July 2018
Interview
I was first contacted through a recruiter who then set me up with a Tesla engineer who would be a potential coworker. Roughly a week later, I had to prepare an online presentation on one of my past projects to a panel. This was followed up by four 30 minute one-on-one interviews. This is the most important part of the entire interview process. In total the presentation and interviews took about 3.5 hours, but it was not too difficult if you are qualified for the position.
I was then flown out to the Gigafactory for a relatively short interview. It consisted of a plant tour, one-on-one interview with a manager, a ride in a Model X, and a benefits review. Each section lasted 30 minutes and was with other engineering candidates besides the interview, but I believe we were mostly interviewing for different positions.
I was contacted less than a week later saying they cannot offer me a position due to a significant reduction in process engineering openings. This was a day after their most recent earnings report which was not too positive, so I'm assuming this is why many openings were eliminated.
I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Tesla (Lathrop, CA) in Mar 2026
Interview
The interview process consisted of an initial recruiter screening followed by a technical panel interview with multiple engineers from manufacturing and process teams. The discussion focused heavily on real-world problem solving, data-driven decision making, and manufacturing concepts such as OEE, process optimization, and root cause analysis. I was asked to walk through past projects in detail, especially those involving throughput improvement, yield optimization, and cross-functional collaboration. The panel emphasized practical thinking, ownership, and the ability to scale solutions for high-volume production environments. Behavioral questions were also included to assess teamwork and adaptability in fast-paced settings.
Did presentation on project of my choice, then 6 30 minute interview with different people. Questions were asked mostly on the presentation & general concepts behind process engineering. Make sure you are thorough with your resume & concepts
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Real time examples on solving process engineering problems with the data presented
technical round- Asked mostly about handson experience with batteries, lab scale processes. The interview was fairly quick, I didnt get it but it depends on what the team is looking for an overall fit
