      Sales Associate Interview

      25 Jan 2011
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Texarkana, TX
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at The Buckle (Texarkana, TX) in Oct 2010

      Interview

I asked a relatively new employee in the store about job opportunities, and was told I look and seem like I'd be a good fit for the job. She told me to go talk to a person at the register, and I gave the person at the register my e-mail and was supposed to receive a link to apply but did not. I decided to just go through the website and I reached the application without difficulty. If you pass the personalty quiz, you get an immediate email telling you they'd like you to call to schedule an interview. That's where it first gets sketchy. I was not the only person I knew applying for the job. My friend had applied before me, and called to schedule an interview but was given an excuse as to why it couldn't be done, and was told he'd get a call in the near future. I believe a week passed and he still hadn't been contacted. That's when I applied. I got the email asking me to call, and did. The woman set a date and time for my interview, and I told her about my friend's situation. She told me to tell him to call. He called immediately after I got off the phone, and was told the manager was not available so his interview could not be scheduled. It was perhaps a few days later (after my interview took place) that he called again and got his interview scheduled as well. I went to my interview and it took place on the sales floor with two employees. One of them was supposed to be the manager, but she wasn't available, thus someone took her place. They were both very friendly (all the employees seemed to be) and complimented me on my answers. I was told I'd get called about doing my next interview--this time with the manager. My friend had an interview not many days later, which also went well. We both were called that day about our next interview. Mine was scheduled first, and his was only 15 minutes after. I walk in 5 to 10 minutes early, and the manager immediately informs me that the store has been busier than expected, so my interview will have to be rescheduled. I disappointedly ask if this means my friend's interview will have to be rescheduled as well, and she stated that it would be. Somehow, when walking out and going to look for my friend to tell him the bad news, he manages to slip past me and into the store. My friend goes in for his interview, and takes quite a while to leave. I wonder what could be taking so long, so I walk by the store and see him standing on the sales floor being interviewed. He comes out and sees me, seeming excited and telling me she told him to come back in 30 minutes. He initially thought I was joking when I told him what happened. He goes back, and I see him walk off with the manager. When he comes back, he's even more excited, and shows me a card of some sort that describes the different types of denim and other things he needs to learn. He got the job. He told me that when he asked about my interview, she told him she felt bad and was only able to interview him because the store had become less busy. He asked if I could still have my interview on the same day because I was still in the mall, but she said that wasn't possible, as it had already been rescheduled. A few days later, I go in for the interview. The manager does talk to me this time, asking a few questions and not seeming that interested in the answers I had to give. She somehow just seemed less friendly and willing to talk than the previous interviewers. She wrapped up the interview by saying I'd know "either way" through email within the next 24 hours. I was never sent any kind of acceptance or rejection email. Later on, I chatted with employees regarding what happened, and none of them could explain it. One of the interviewers said that when I left my interview with them, they both agreed I was definitely getting the job. The woman that suggested the job to me was also disappointed and surprised.

      Interview

Super quick and easy. The woman who interviews me was very kind and understanding to it being my first retail job. I was offered a job on the spot and was able to ask any lingering questions I had about the role and profession.

Very simple. No behaviour questions. It was basically all about me. We talked about hobbies, availability, college plans. It was like a fun conversation and not a hard, daunting, scary interview.

They bring you in to ask basic interview questions. Make sure you completely dress the part. I was told before the interview by an associate that I should wear clothes they sell there. She didn't go into detail but I take that as they won't hire you if you don't.
