      Software Engineer, Numerical Algorithms Interview

      10 Mar 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Tonal (San Francisco, CA) in Jan 2020

      Interview

Pretty straightforward with a phone screening, DS assignment, video call, and then an onsite with multiple people to discuss work related to the assignment. The interviewers were very excited and positive throughout the process and the onsite, however, they didn't get back to me when they said that they would and even then required me to nudge them, and ultimately, declined to make an offer despite the optimism at the onsite. The technical questions were very specific to the role, however, what intrigued me was the other DS interview review from last year, which mentioned that it felt like the company was just asking for a consultation for their algorithms. Interestingly, someone else told me the same thing when I vaguely described the technical assignment to them, so definitely be careful of this process.

      Question 1

Typical behavioral interview questions. The technical questions were very position-specific as mentioned above.
