I applied through university. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at University of California Berkeley (Berkeley, CA) in July 2012
Interview
There was no real interview. I was asked to submit my prior teaching experiences and to submit a list of my teaching preferences. I was told that most graduate students get the job, and it seems as if this is true. Overall it was an easy process. You do have to be flexible about what you are willing to teach.
I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at University of California Berkeley (Berkeley, CA) in Apr 2018
Interview
I submitted an application with 3 short essays, along with my CV. After getting through the initial round, I went to an in person interview with the directors of the program. The interview was about 20 mins in which they asked some questions about my interest in teaching for the program and being part of the fellowship. I talked about my history with students, dealing with crisis situations, and interest in student mentorship. They asked more questions to probe about this.
I applied in-person. I interviewed at University of California Berkeley (Berkeley, CA) in Apr 2015
Interview
Wasn't really required to interview but many people have to answer basic knowledge to demonstrate that they can explain ideas. It was way less pressure that I had expected.

Had to email professors repeatedly, got a few meetings, they were pretty casual, mainly questions about relevant work experience. Sometimes they ask for references. Works differently for different departments. Need to go prepared to convince them why you are fit for the role. Some departments just have a GSI co-ordinator who handles the whole thing, others require you to talk to professor to assess whether its a good fit.
