I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at University of Michigan in Feb 2016
Interview
it was not very hard process, it depends on your resume, grades, recommendation letters, and your statement of purpose. The most important thing is research papers and interests. Make sure that you mention the professor that you want to work with.
I talked to the PI I was interested in working with, his lab and other PIs from the department.
General questions about:
-research interests and background
-the research done in the lab
-mentorship style
-likelihood of accepting the offer.

Interview
A professor reached out to me and asked me some questions related to my past work. He also asked me fundamental math questions, which isn't common during a interview I guess.

Interview
The interviewer (professor) was not serious at all. He lacked the proper respect for theoretical work and left for calling his families during our interview. I can tell that he just did the interview because the school told him to. I didn't feel being properly valued at all.
