      Tutor Interview

      7 Apr 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at VIPKid (New York, NY)

      Interview

The process was excruciatingly long, very detailed and it all ended in a hard fail. I felt very upset that I went through two rounds of mock classes and a long online module training. All of this was unpaid and then, I went out and purchased materials so that I could make my home office look like a classroom. I purchase props, a dry erase board and many school supplies. I felt that the "mentor tutors" were incredibly critical and the company expected so much for someone who would be paid only $8/hour! I have lots of hands-on, full-time teaching experiences and two degrees in education and still DID NOT get the position! To say the least, I reached out to the company regarding my mock classes and they never replied.

A greatly respect your experience, and having so many years teaching experience is wonderful. As online education continues to grow different skills are sometimes needed, and at times, skills honed in the classroom may not translate well to the online platform. While we hope that when applying that our applicants are able to prepare as well as they feel they have, VIPKID does not require the purchase of classroom items or equipment during the application process. Currently we are working to improve our recruitment procedures, and apologize for any miscommunication that occurred during your interview. We have already implemented several new guidelines for our recruiters to help minimize this, and we would love to hear back from you in the future. You are welcome to email us at teachvip@vipkid.com.cn if you have further questions.
