I applied online. I interviewed at West Cornwall Pasty (Bourton on the Water, England) in June 2023
Interview
Nice manager to my face at the interview, really nice, her husband was helping out and was really kind and made me a coffee and a tea but they were actually advertising for a team leader but really wanted someone to take over the dirty hot job in the kitchen, cover summer holidays and take the fault if anything went wrong I suspect. She said she really needed to be on the shop floor and doing management duties rather than being in the kitchen. She also liked going away in a camper and had a fortnight booked away. From the interview I didnt fully appreciate how much she really needed someone in the kitchen until I did an unpaid trial shift, I turned up whereas if I had known I would of been up front and explained I'm not a cook. She was stressed in the kitchen on that day and I overheard her complaining she hadn't been told there wasn't enough pasty s cooked. There was a coach load of tourists turned up, nobody's fault but she hadn't anticipated the demand so felt it best to blame me on my trial shift after she told me to let her know when the pastys got down to 1 pasty. One customer bought three of the same so I informed her but obviously they were gone in one hit. Takes 40 minutes to cook more. It was like that all day. A lot of The food ran out quite early. However they only pay 10.43 an hour for all those responsibilities. She said they only had three people who could do the kitchen. Therefore advertising for a job at 11 an hr as team leader which is really low anyway but actually wanting a cook at 10.43 an hour to take over a lot of other cooking responsibilities as well. There were employees getting paid a really good salary to do the job while she's not there so why would a new person do it for 10.43. Was told would be taught the coffee machine last, in a cafe. She obviously didn't want me doing that at all as she had people who liked that job. Met the staff who were nice and her husband was helping out who was very nice but felt misled and insulted. Was told could work up to team leader if wanted. I wonder how many people will accept these terms at 10.43 an hour. They had enough staff trained as team leaders and baristas therefore I suspected once the holiday season was over and the rush calmed down I would have served my purpose as holiday cover and kitchen cook and would be let go.
