Shrink is, broadly speaking, a loss of merchandise (the difference between how much product the computer thinks you have and how much product you actually have). Most shrink is caused by theft, but it could also be caused by somebody (accidentally) ringing something up wrong or someone simply counting wrong. This is one reason that accuracy and care are important.
