      Software Engineer Interview

      8 Feb 2025
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Germantown, MD
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Whisker Labs (Germantown, MD) in Feb 2025

      Interview

Quite a few yellow flags. 'First call will just be a discussion' plops in a technical assessment about halfway through. Alright. Had a powerpoint of what was to be accomplished in the assessment. Screen sharing on interviewer's side disconnected at one point, I asked them to put it back on the screen. "You're doing fine, just keep going." Second call was 1.5hr technical assessment: there was an email leading up to this about what would be discussed. Two interviewers were nice enough, assessment was fair. Third interview I was told I'd be extending on the assessment from R2. Fair enough. I was told there would be 6 people on the R3 panel. Seems overkill, but alright, let'sa go (my Mario voice). R3 rolls around (2 hour interview), and there was nine people on the call. You read that right: nine people. Maybe 3 talked, perhaps 4. Similar to round 1, there was an extra bit they introduced in a verbal manner while on the call. I was pretty sure I heard the interviewer right, but apparently not. They were visibly annoyed that I was implementing the solution in a backwards manner. I was able to talk my way through it, but once again, bit of a similar vibe to R1. 'Just figure it out, no big deal!'. Write it out on a powerpoint/slide, keep the slide visible, everyone's happy. Made for a pretty unsettling energy on the call. Interview was scheduled for two hours, they cut me off at 100minutes. That was nice. /s I get a message from HR saying 'all 3 candidates were strong, but we're proceeding with someone else.' Ask for feedback, crickets. 2/5 stars. Not because I didn't get the job, but as described above just a few scenarios that rubbed me the wrong way. It seems like they have a cool product and have a ton of sensors in the field, but deep down I feel like I may have dodged a bit of a bullet.

      Interview questions [3]

      Question 1

Here's a CSV. Here's a given location (lat lon pair) not in the CSV. Find the line item in the CSV that is nearest the given location.
      1 Answer

      Question 2

Here's 2 endpoints: one returns a few items (property A, property B). Second endpoint takes two params, property A and property B (from endpoint 1) created a UI to handle this. Alot of data is returned, so need some sort of filtering implementation.
      Answer question

      Question 3

Add a third param to the 2nd endpoint. How would you get the datetime results based on this new attribute?
