      Research Scientist Interview

      29 Nov 2010
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Wolfspeed in Aug 2010

      Interview

I applied for the epitaxial research scientist position on the Cree website. A few days later I received a questionnaire to fill out. Questions included typical inquiries into my research and work experience and also some personality questions (e.g. "Who would you refuse to work with?"). After submitting the completed questionnaire, I received an email from one of the research scientists to set up a phone interview. The phone interview lasted approximately 45 minutes. The overall tone of the person interviewing me was very arrogant. At one point the interviewer asked if I had googled him before the phone interview. At the end of the interview, he told me that I would have a second interview with one of the R&D managers. The second phone interview was much like the first...typical questions about my graduate research and technical questions on vacuum science and epitaxial growth. At the end of the second phone interview I was invited out to an on-site interview. The on-site interview was grueling. It began with a 30 minute presentation, during which I was interrupted and asked what the point of my research was. Following the presentation, I went immediately into several 1:1 interviews with other research scientists. These lasted ~40-45 minutes each. Several of the interviewers were very arrogant and quite rude. Overall, I found the 1:1 interviewers to lack professionalism. At midday, I went to lunch with 3 of the research scientists, and this was also not an enjoyable experience. I thought this would be a time where I could ask questions about the company; get a better understanding of the day-to-day work environment, work-life balance, etc. But no, I spent all of lunch doing a back of the envelope calculation "how many barbers does a city of 1 million people need." After the interview, I knew that I would not accept an offer if one was presented to me. I did not receive an offer. Overall, I was not impressed at all with Cree. I've been on other interviews before and since, and this was by far the most unprofessional group of people I have ever come across. If you have other options, don't even bother with Cree.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Wolfspeed in Aug 2019

      Interview

Applied online through the Cree website. Heard back from the hiring manager within a couple weeks. Had a phone screening with the hiring manager and then a skype interview with his team 2 weeks after that to present my doctoral research. Both interviews were strange, the phone screen especially. He would beat around the bush of what he wanted to know, and phrased the questions in such an odd manner. He also asked me a question set up as, "would option A or option B would be a better way to do this thing?" Well, it was neither and he was trying to trip me up. He tried this more than once, and I find that to be rude. Reading through some of these interview reviews, I was really dreading the worst. Thankfully, it wasn't as bad as I feared, and the hiring manager wasn't as rude as some of the reviews indicated. However, I still had a negative experience and I'm honestly glad I didn't get an offer. There wasn't a good fit on either side apparently. As a note, one of my friends also interviewed with them and did get an offer. He declined because they couldn't agree on salary. What they offered wasn't going to be worth working 50-60 hours a week for a manager with a big ego.

      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Wolfspeed (Durham, NC) in July 2018

      Interview

Interview process consisted of phone screen, followed by full day presentation/interview/lunch. Afterwards was invited to dinner with several of the interviewers. I found that the Cree interview process was very enjoyable. The interviewers were warm and friendly, and interviews felt much like research discussions one would have with colleagues. Obviously, some questions were still challenging and were designed to try and test knowledge/thought process. Presentation was around 30 minutes max while individual interviews varied from 30-45 minutes each.
