I applied in-person. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Worcester Polytech (Worcester, MA) in Apr 2009
Interview
I sent in their application, and a few weeks later was contacted for a short interview. The interview was just a little time reviewing the application, and then a series of open ended questions about past experience with this sort of tutoring work, a few "What would you do if..." questions about some of the more extreme potential scenarios of the job, and asking me which courses I felt comfortable teaching. I got the feeling that past course performance and ability to answer questions reasonable were about equally important to getting the job.
