      I interviewed at ZOLL Medical

      Interview

I applied online and had an initial phone screen with the talent acquisition representative. I then had a phone screen with the hiring manager. Zoll then flew me in for an interview, sent a car to and from the airport, provided a hotel, etc. I interviewed from approximately 8 AM to 1 PM without a break, which was fine. I spoke with at least eight people, including talent acquisition, regulatory, R&D, quality, and engineering. I spoke with an additional regulatory person the following day via telephone. Everyone was very cordial. The interviews went well, though one of the engineers questioned my experience with a task that fell outside regulatory (dFMEA). As a longtime regulatory consultant who has worked with medical device development teams, I have often participated in and supported cross-functional activities, including engineering activities, not strictly within the bounds of regulatory. I don't think he liked it when I was able to give him a detailed explanation of how I would go about developing a dFMEA. I interviewed on the 2nd of the month. On the 28th, I contacted talent acquisition via email for feedback. Silence. On the 11th of the following month, I again contacted talent acquisition. Silence. On the 18th, I contacted the hiring manager, using the email address on the business card she provided during the interview. The following day, I received a phone call from the talent acquisition representative. She said she had tried to contact me twice previously via phone. I had not taken a call, my phone showed no missed calls, and I had no voice mails, but I suppose it's possible she called. She said "the team" had met and decided I did not have enough direct supervisory experience for the position, which is fine, except it shouldn't have taken six weeks to let me know. My theory is that they were hedging their bets, hoping to find someone local, better, or cheaper (though they quoted the salary range, not me) while keeping their options open by not contacting me. I could be wrong. One irony is that they talked up the "culture" and the "team" during the interview process. I hope that they treat their hires with more courtesy than their candidates.
