      Data Analyst Interview

      16 June 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Chai Wan
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Zung Fu (Chai Wan) in May 2024

      Interview

The experience is bad. Before the face-to-face interview, there was a skill test related to PowerBI. Should you are selected after this phase, there would be Excel/Python test prior to the face-to-face interview. The experience of the test is bad. The Python environment is not properly set up before the test is given, rendering a messy procedure. After the test, the manager of the analyst team would come for the interview. Again, the experience is bad. The interviewer often interrupted my answers and would not give me back the ground to continue to the previous topic. Also, from the process, it was made clear that the whole "analytic department" is in fact "marketing department" actually. It was told that the department would use survey data and some other data to conduct marketing research and used data to support their thinking. This whole process is essentially the OLD TRADITIONAL way of marketing department (with false belief that data is used to support their thoughts), instead of what a "analytic department" means to be (utilize data to apply machine learning model to do market segmentation). Besides, the atmosphere was clear that the whole department is not taking the genuine data professionals into serious account. They treat professional skills like Tableau/PowerBI/Python (which requires a lot of efforts to learn and technical knowledge in order to use well) and the like just as "Microsoft Word/Excel" which is rather disgusting. It was also asked in the interview what is my hobby and if I played "Arena of Valor" (a mobile game that is like League of Legend). This projected an image that they are so free to play games and disregard or even be unaware of the fact that the skills of PowerBI/Tableau/Python is so technical and professional that they requires time to learn and master and one with hearts devoted in those skills would have no time to play those game. In the interview, it was asked that how many years of marketing or CRM loyalty working experience I had. This, again, translates into another proof that the whole "analytic department" is in fact "marketing department", with little to no knowledge as to how true "data analytics" works. They used the reason of lacking those experience and they are hiring senior staffs to indirectly reject me very soon (although their job ad said they would consider senior and junior level). All in all, they hired "marketing assistant" in the name of a "data analyst / analyst" and and typical job requirements and skillset that a "data analyst/analyst" would face. A big gap between the expectation of the manager of the "analytic department (i.e. marketing department)" and the candidates drawn from the job advertisement exists. It is simply a big mismatch. Not recommend any genuine data professionals to take an interview. Even if you got an offer, you should find yourself working in a condition that is unrelated to your career.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

PowerBI home test, Excel/Python on-site test, an interview to check if you are with heavy marketing experience (with the very professional and latest data analytic technology that needs devotions to learn and wished to work as an ordinary marketing assistant)
