      Consultant Controller/Assistant Controller Interview

      8 May 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Austin, TX
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at vcfo (Austin, TX)

      Interview

After submitting my resume, I was contacted by e-mail and phone within 1 to 2 weeks by a VCFO recruiter, who was located in Dallas (I am in Austin), to set up an interview with Human Resources by phone. I first had to take an Excel test and another test, which were fairly simple and I scored very high. I was told by the recruiter that my skills and experience were great and that I am definitely what they are looking for. I had my phone interview with HR, who was not located in Austin, but some other state (maybe TN?) She offered my very encouraging feedback as well, told me that I am what they are looking for, and I thought, wow, this is going very well. Fast forward about 1 week later, and I am scheduled to go into the Austin office location to meet with a lead individual. Again, thought it went well. About 2 days later, I hear back from the original VCFO recruiter that they are going to be interviewing other candidates and I that they don't have any clients with work that fits my background at this time. WHAT? Why did everyone during the interview process say I had what they needed and I fit what they were looking for? I searched on linked in and found backgrounds of consultants they have working for them, and I was not blown away by any of their experience. I had more credentials, stronger skill set, and more variety of industry experience than most of their existing consultants. I was aware of the decrement in salary I would be taking by leaving my current position, but I was ready to move into consulting and was really excited about the flexibility this could offer. I felt completely misled and that they all just wasted my time. I can only imagine that if they string candidates along, what do they do with their clients. They seem to undervalue and underpay their consultants, but drive high prices with clients. Smoke and mirrors.
